I have been a big fan of Google’s Picasa2 photo editing software and Picasa Web Albums, but something has been wrong for sometime now and I cannot understand what. Something is no longer working the way it used to and whether it is the software or the photo albums I cannot say. Unfortunately, there is no where to go for help when things like this happen. I have tried Google’s blog and message boards, but they are not the place to get any technical information nor help.
I am now back to uploading my photographs to Flickr as they allow me to upload my original images and allow me to download the same size, something that Picasa used to do, but does not anymore. No matter what I do, Picasa2 changes the sizes of my photographs. Usually it makes them smaller, but the other day I exported two photographs. One went at the original size so I was happy, then the other went from the original of 2.5 mb to 9.5 mb when I exported it. I have no idea why. I tried twice and it was the same both times.
This all may have begun with the latest upgrade of Picasa2 which was a few weeks ago. It may have begun when I paid for another year of service which was about the same time. And to boot, I started using a new camera and downloaded its software onto my computer. I did all three of these same things about the same time and that is when I first noticed that all of my photographs at Picasa Web Albums had been resized smaller.
So for anyone wanting to upload and download your original size of image, Picasa may not be the place to do it. Picasa resizes my images smaller and I have no control over that. Make sure you double check to see it your original image is being uploaded when you choose that option.
The only suggestion I have found at Picasa Help for general problems is to uninstall the software and then reinstall it: http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?answer=15040&topic=1144 . I will be trying that to see if it works.

Never used Picasa. Never needed to. I’ve been happy with flickr. I hope you like flickr. Welcome aboard!
Congratulations on your new Nikon garamchai. Have lots of fun with it. Yes, I know flickr well. Have been using it a long time: http://flickr.com/photos/neddy/sets/72157594194022116/show/

I tried the uninstall and reinstall of Picasa2 software and that did not seem to help any. On April 15th, 2008 I received the following explanation of my Picasa Web Albums from Picasa Support:
IMAGE QUALITY
You mentioned that the files you downloaded from Picasa Web Albums were not the same size as the original files that you uploaded. The difference in photo file size can be attributed to any edits that you made within Picasa before you uploaded. After you make edits to your photo, Picasa needs to then re-sample the image to create a new version of the jpeg (apart from the original). This requires Picasa to apply an amount of jpeg compression to your photo. In order to incorporate your photo edits into your uploaded image, the actual size of the uploaded photo is therefore less than the full photo file.
If you made no edits to your photos and uploaded it at the ’slowest upload; largest size setting,’ you would find the full photo file uploaded.
You can control the jpeg compression level of your files by using the ‘Export’ option before you upload to Picasa Web Albums. For more information on exporting photos, please visit http://picasa.google.com/support/bin/answer.py?hl=en&answer=13821
If you’d like to go into more depth about the compression of unsaved edits upon upload, please read this informative post in our user group at http://groups.google.com/group/PicasaGuide/browse_thread/thread/a21c26049b83ebb0/d1ec931bf26518b4?

Have the same issue with picasa3.
Use setting ´keep original size´however I loose 30-50% of file size during upload (upgraded to paid subscription since picasa indeed ois very handy in day2day use and google adverstises picasa as a backup medium for storing ´original´files). Send mail to picasa, however no response yet
Bert – I am a paying customer of Picasa, so I do not think that remedies the problem. The big problem is that Google did not purchase Flickr.
